Perceived (lack) of instrumentality

General scientific definition

In expectancy theory (Vroom,1964) three components interact: expectancy, does my effort lead to the required performance, or can I do this; Instrumentality, if I do this, will this lead to certain outcomes or rewards; valence; are these outcomes or rewards valued.  The level of motivation is achieved by multiplying the three elements. Hence, if there is no instrumentality then there is no motivation.
